Alejandra Mizala

Has a PhD in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley; and is currently the Academic Director of the Centre for Advanced Research in Education (CIAE) at the University of Chile.

Her research has been focused on education economics and the study of labour markets in Chile and Latin America. She has published two books, several book chapters and numerous articles in academic journals.

From 2011 to 2015 she was a member of the Executive Committee of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association (LACEA); from 2004 to 2005 she was the President of the Economic Society of Chile and in 2006 until 2009 was advisor for the Superior Council of Science of the National Fund for Research in Science and Technology.

She has been a member of various Advisory Commissions for the government of Chile, including the Advisory Commission on Labour and Minimum Wage (2010-2011) the Presidential Advisory Council on Labour and Equality (2007-2008), the Presidential Advisory Council on the Quality of Education (2006) and the Presidential Advisory Council for the Reform of Social Security (2006). She has worked as a consultant for international organizations, including the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank, and for public institutions in Chile and abroad.

In 2015, the University of Chile awarded her the “Amanda Labarca” Merit Award for her contributions to the academic and scientific development and for advancing public policies and education.
